Caring for silver jewelry
That's annoying! The new silver jewelry has barely been worn for a few weeks before it shows dark and black spots and no longer shines as beautifully as it did when you received it brand new from us. But what has happened?
Silver jewelry often discolors due to oxidation and chemical reactions with the environment. Here are the main reasons why silver jewelry can change color:
Oxidation with air (sulphides)
Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air (especially hydrogen sulphide, which can be contained in air humidity and exhaust fumes). This reaction causes silver oxide to form on the surface, resulting in the typical dark, matt black patina often referred to as “tarnishing”. This happens especially if the jewelry is not worn for a long time or is not properly cared for.
Reactions with skin care products or perfume
Silver jewelry can also become discolored if it comes into contact with cosmetics, skin care products, perfume or hairspray. These products contain chemical substances such as alcohol, acids or oils, which can attack the silver and lead to discoloration. Sweating can also accelerate oxidation, especially during intense physical activity or in hot weather.
Contact with chlorine or salt water
Chlorine in swimming pools and salt water (e.g. when swimming in the sea) can also lead to a chemical reaction with silver. Chlorine is particularly aggressive and can cause the jewelry to tarnish quickly.
Heavy metals in the air
Heavy metals such as ozone, exhaust fumes and other chemical compounds in the air can also react with silver and cause it to tarnish.
Storage
If silver jewelry is not stored properly, especially in humid environments (e.g. bathrooms), it can tarnish more quickly. Contact with other metals or certain substances can also promote the oxidation process.
How can you prevent or slow down tarnishing?
-
Regular cleaning
Clean your silver jewelry regularly to remove deposits and oxidation. An antibacterial silver cleaning cloth is suitable for this: Star Piercing Silberpflegetuch antibakteriell
-
Avoidance of chemicals
Avoid contact with cosmetics, perfume and hairspray before using your jewelry.
-
Storage
Store silver jewelry in an airtight box or in special polishing cloths that help prevent oxidation.
-
Carry
Silver jewelry should be worn regularly, as skin contact helps to prevent tarnishing and polish the silver.
Although the tarnishing of silver jewelry is unavoidable, it can be slowed down and controlled by regular care and protective measures.
